Trump Signals Scale-Back of Federal Immigration Operations in Minneapolis

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that federal immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis will be eased somewhat as public anger rises following the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti.

Trump said in an interview that the federal effort there would “de-escalate a little bit,” referring to changes in personnel leading the mission. He explained that White House border czar Tom Homan, who is now overseeing the Minneapolis operation, is someone who can collaborate effectively with state governors and city mayors.

“Tom is a tough guy, but I've watched over the years, and he's gotten along with governors and he gets along with mayors,” Trump added, pointing to Homan’s ability to interact with local leadership.

Addressing the fatal shooting of Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, Trump called the situation “terrible.” He also commented on his discomfort with the fact that Pretti was carrying a firearm, suggesting that this context was relevant as tensions around immigration enforcement grew in Minnesota.

“I think the whole thing is terrible,” he said when referring to the circumstances of Pretti’s death during a targeted border patrol action in Minneapolis.

Trump also discussed details of Pretti carrying a gun at the scene, saying, “I don't like the fact that he was carrying a gun that was fully loaded, and he had two magazines with them, and it's pretty unusual. But nobody knows when they saw the gun, how they saw the gun, everything else.”

In reflecting on two controversial shootings in the city, the president said, “Bottom line, it was terrible. Both of them were terrible,” a comment that connected Pretti’s case with another fatal encounter involving Renee Good, who had been killed earlier in the month by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer.

Trump referenced the supporters of the earlier victim in his remarks, stating, “And I'm not sure about his parents, but I know her (Good’s) parents were big Trump fans…They were tremendous Trump people, Trump fans.”
